الملخص الإنجليزي

This study was concerned with the sociocultural and linguistic benefits that can be affected through teaching Non-Native English Literature for English majors at Jordanian universities. This study sought to answer the following questions: 1- What is the impact of teaching NNEL on the sociocultural benefits that English major students at Jordanian universities may have? 2- What is the impact of teaching NNEL on the linguistic benefits that English major students at Jordanian universities may have? The subjects of the study consisted of 33 students registered in the Introduction to Third World Cultures 3 credit-hour course, in the academic year 2006-2007 at the Hashimite University. The subjects (males and females) were second and third year students from the English Language Department and the Department of Cultural Studies and they descended from different social classes and different academic levels.

The subjects were exposed to the same activities. The material used was a combination of the novel predetermined by the professor responsible for teaching the course chosen in addition to an Indian novel recommended by the researcher.

This material consisted mainly of Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart which stood for the African non-native English literary production and Rao's Kanthapura which represented the South-Asian one. The findings of the study showed statistically significant differences between the pre-test and the post-test in favor of the post-test concerning the sociocultural and the linguistic benefits.

Consequently, the results provided sufficient answers to the questions of the study. The study was finalized by conclusions followed by recommendations suggested by the researcher.

Researchers interested in the field of NNEL need to conduct further empirical studies that shed light on the effect of teaching the NNEL on the sociocultural and linguistic benefits of English Departments' students.

Heads of English departments and professors of the English language and literature at Jordanian universities are recommended to use the NNEL and literary texts in general as invaluable resources to enhance international understanding, human respect and tolerance of the other.
