الملخص EN

Research into second language learning motivation (LLM) has recently proliferated in many directions reflecting a growing appreciation of its role in the learning of other languages.

But despite the plethora of research in the field, researchers are still pondering the very basic questions which have perplexed pioneer researchers in the field.

This paper sheds light on the complexity of the concept of LLM through examining its multifaceted aspects and through critically appraising the socioe-ducational model and other three sets of major theories that have been developed for the purpose of understanding how the concept works and what affects it.

The theories reviewed here are the self-determination theory, goal theories and attribution theory.

Towards the end, the paper discusses some innovative perspectives on LLM that should be considered in order to arrive at a more satisfying understanding of the concept.
