الملخص EN

The introduction of Western civilisation into the continent was largely responsible for the emergence of groups of Africans endorsing modernity as a sure path of development and progress.

Especially on the coastal areas, westernised Africans since an early time had called for the adoption of western education to develop Africa.

However, it is more intriguing to understand the attitude of traditional rulers as to how they approached western education.

They were naturally opponents of change, yet they appeared flexible enough to make use of colonial education to better situate themselves in the colonial setting.
