الملخص الإنجليزي
The aim of this study is to find out the best method for translating some special Koranic expressions, through the assessment of the ways these expressions were rendered in three widely used translations of the Holy Koran.
The data analyzed consists of twenty special expressions.
The evaluation of translations followed a linguistic approach based on analysis, comparison and explicating the rhetorical aspects in the Koranic language.
The success of a translation method is determined on the basis of the accuracy and the intelligibility of the resultant construction.
The study shows that literal translation is the best method for rendering these Koranic expressions, because it maintains both the direct and indirect meanings of the expression whether it is idiomatic or figurative.
However, literal translation can be blocked by linguistic and cultural constraints.
In this case, the expression needs to be reduced to its sense, but the lost effect has to be compensated for.
The study also stresses the need to use footnotes in Koranic translations to provide the background information necessary for bridging the cultural gaps and ensuring the correct understanding of a literally-translated expression.
The study consists of four chapters.
The first chapter is an introduction to the topic of Koranic translation.
The second chapter reviews the related literature on religious translation in general and Koranic translation in particular.
Chapter three states the methodology of the study.
Chapter four is a display of the analysis of the expressions, the evaluation of the translations and the findings of the study.
It also displays a brief summary of the study, the conclusions and recommendations.
