الملخص الإنجليزي

Poverty, climate change and blockade are conditions encouraging the use of solar cooker in the Gaza Strip.

The study aims at assessing the environmental and economic benefits of using solar cookers from household's perception in Gaza Strip, investigate the suitability and convenience of solar cooker performance (suitable time of cooking, cooking schedule, cooking habits, use rate, availability of appropriate sunny period and space, etc.,) from households perception and assessing the technical and maintenance accessibility and availability of solar cooker.

The researcher used the descriptive analytical approach and applied it through using mixed methods in order to provide a combination between semistructural questionnaires, in addition to interviews (qualitative paradigm) with 5 persons to obtain deep information about the environmental and economic benefits of using solar cooker according to households’ perception.

The sample consisted of 44 female housewives that are using the solar cooker in Deir El-Balah in the central region of the Gaza Strip.

The results showed that: the solar cooker is a safe device, but 47.7% of the sample believe that the process of use solar cooker needs sufficient experience to deal with it.

According to the needed space for solar cooker, 59.1% stated that it does not occupy a large space in the home.

So that women, 15.9% of the sample, stated that they can change the place of the solar cooker periodically and easily: in front of the house, on the roof as well as the back garden, in order to get as much sunlight as possible.

The sample fully confirmed that before noon is the best time to using solar cooker.

The food takes 2-4 hours to be cooked according to 77.2% of the sample.

Solar cooker does not need new utensils.

About 59.1 % of the sample use daily utensils.

On the other hand, 29.5% of the sample used different utensils to some extent, i.e., utensils that are neglected or old.

The solar cooker is suitable to be used to prepare various meals such as soups, oriental food (45.5% of the sample), pastries and desserts (38.6%).

The meals that cooked in the solar cooker are more delicious than the meals cooked with liquid gas according to 70.4% of the sample, moreover 65.9% of the sample preferred the taste of solar meals on the meals that are cooked by electricity.

It is worth mentioning that 22.7% of the total sample stated that they use it to heat water.

On the other hand, 47.7% the sample confirmed that the solar cooker needs annual maintenance.

From economic perspective, solar cooker reduces the amount of liquid gas and electricity consumption by about 506 NIS per year per household and 755 NIS per year per household, respectively.

This savings from both liquefied gas and electricity up to 1261 NIS per year for the family, which makes the solar cooker suitable for poor people, so they can use their savings in other purposes.

The device which used by the sample is a primitive, therefore 22.7% of the sample believe that the solar cooker needs some modifications to become better productive.

So it is recommended that add more modifications to the solar cooker so that it can be used in other uses and motivating other researchers and engineers to add improvements such as renewable energy means so that it can be an effective device.

And the researcher also recommends the organizations to increase the awareness sessions for more categories of people to disseminate this important culture in the society and support the role of women in the society in the fields of socioenvironmental activities.
