Abstract EN

This topic addresses one of the semantic phenomena, which is considered a rich aspect of Arabic language, it means synonymy.

I attempted to study whether or not synonymy really exists through the most authentic and quality works of the pre-Islamic poetry known as al-Mu’allaqat al-Sab ‘ (the seven hanging odes).

the latter are deemed to be the oldest pieces of poetry that had ever reached us.

by virtue of old linguists, Arabic language had been compiled, classified and written in various books, dictionaries and compendiums whose authors have adequately quoted from the seven odes.

the latter are considered very important after the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

the poets of the seven hanging odes had employed several terms having similar meanings but different structures on the ground of their synonymy and the possibility of changing their positions without changing their meanings.

this does not appear only in the work of seven odes, but also with poets living in the same linguistic environment and idiom.

in the end, this would give confirmation a preference over denial, especially after searching for the meanings of the synonymous terms in the seven odes quoted in the classical dictionaries, without denying the existence of small differences in some of them.
