Translation techniques and procedures have received a great deal of attention by western theorists of translation.
However, to the best of our knowledge no work concerning the study of “translation techniques, procedures and their uses in teaching English as a foreign language at Mosul University” was carried out.
The present study is to a bridge that gap.
It is well-known, that modern language teaching traditionally overuses and misuses translation in the class -room due to failure to understand the principles of teaching.
The current paper tackles the use of translation in teaching English as a foreign language at Mosul University.
It aims to help students to develop and reinforce their competence and knowledge regarding English Language .Hence, translation is considered as a “pedagogical device”.
Furthermore, translation lets learners communicate into and from the foreign language.
Doing that, learners will recognize the differences and similarities in lexicons, syntactic structures, and semantic elements of both languages Consequently, students will have a clear contrastive view of languages in question.
The main finding of this study is that translation can be regarded as a very good device for teaching English as foreign language.
