The discipline of translation involves sequential steps in translating Arabic into other languages.
One of the most significant considerations understands the text in its cultural setting.
This article examines the factors that are at play in selecting, of the multitude of literary text that are authored each year, the few text for translation.
Among these factors are such criteria as marketability, literary merit, and personal preferences of the translator.
The article uses translations of nagib mahafouz to illustrate the decision- making process and methods of the discipline and art of translation.
