The aim of the research is to employ the steps of David Merrill's model in teaching the biology curriculum in order to know its effect on the achievement of fifth-year students, and whether there is a development of their metacognitive skills.

The research sample consisted of two groups (experimental and controlling) by (39) students in each group.

To achieve the two research hypotheses, the researcher needed two tools: the first is to build an achievement test for the topics covered in the experiment.

The number of its paragraphs reached (20), and the second is the preparation of a measure of metacognitive skills.

It shall consist of (30) items.

Both are multiple choice type.

Factor honesty, degree of difficulty, discrimination and consistency were found.

The results showed the superiority of the experimental group students who studied according to the steps of David Merrill's model over the students of the control group in the achievement and the metacognitive skills.
