Abstract EN

This study aimed to show how to develop reading fluency among non-native Arabic learners.

After examining the concept of reading fluency, as well as identify the obstacles that may inhibit non-native Arabic learners from developing reading fluency.

Moreover, it will explain how to overcome such obstacles by providing activities and exercises that enhance and develop non-native Arabic learners’ reading fluency.

Lastly, it will identify the forms of reading fluency used in assessing a learners’ level and review the elements of reading fluency as provided by ACTFL.

This study relied on the applied-descriptive approach to identify the reading problems of non-native Arabic learners in the intermediate-level, which is taught by the researcher in the General Program for Teaching Arabic to Speakers of Other Languages at the Language Center at the University of Jordan.

It also relied on the researcher’s experience in using activities and language exercises to develop their reading fluency, and to show their impact on helping non-native Arabic learners obtain reading fluency.

The study concludes that the development of reading fluency amongst non-native Arabic learners is essential in the overall process of learning Arabic and is reflected in the development of oral fluency.

Moreover, reading fluency has a clear impact on enhancing students’ self-confidence and encourages them to continue in the process of learning Arabic as a second language.

Finally, the study supports the effectiveness of using language games, technology, and participatory/competitive activities in developing students’ reading fluency.
