Abstract EN

This study seeks to explore grammatical deviation phenomena in press language through a case study at Al Ghad Jordanian newspaper.

The study proposes that the newspaper headlines usually use the nominative sentence instead of the verbal sentence.

This has been resulted from an intentional usage that the pragmatic message necessitates in the news, within cultural, social and political contexts.

Consequently, this language seems capable of deploying deviation based on certain specifications, which the study might be restricted to.

As the study cannot cover this phenomena in all press language in general, a study sample has been chosen from one newspaper.

Meanwhile, the study attempts to interpret the reasons of this deviation through studying the syntactic structure and its changes within the pragmatic theory.

The study concluded that the news headline has an informative message (purpose) by which pragmatic elements are achieved, revealing that the news topic is the most important element.

The news topic might be an official person, an important issue or a current political situation.
