The phenomenon of the foreign vocabulary of Qur'an : theories and factors

Abstract EN

Since the birth of Islam, scholars and religious men have tried to investigate the phenomenon of the foreign vocabulary of the Qur’an ; thus, different and contradictory views emerged.

this study aims at reviewing the theories of the foreign vocabulary of the Qur’an focusing on the main factors and this phenomenon.

besides, it sheds light on the origins of the so-called “borrowed words”.

based on the review and the discussion, it was found that many common nouns and verbs have ‘originated’ from a foreign language ; this might very well be the case, but their use and understanding amongst the Arabs, perhaps for centuries before the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), had made them as “Arabic” as could possibly be.
