This paper close reads Assia Djebar’s the tongue’s blood does not run dry to showcase the effects of monolingualism on the Algerian identity under French and Algerian rule.

this work also assumes that Djebar attempts to achieve a linguistic armistice and reconciliation between languages in Algeria post-independence to reach unity and a solid national identity.

in this respect, the present paper analyses Djebar’s plots and literary devices to capture her political stances and endeavors.
