Abstract EN

The research is aimed at studying the phenomenon of Pausing in Semitic languages in a comparative manner between Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac.

The importance lays in revealing the points of similarity and dissimilarity among them as they are of a common linguistic origin, defining its research materials in Arabic, Hebrew, and the Syriac languages, and identifying the descriptive elements that influence which are affected by the phenomenon of pausing.

These elements are: consonants, vowels, syllabuses, and stress.

In order to classify the common fundamentals between these languages in the manifestations of pausing, adopting five fundamentals represented in: the shift from vowel to consonant, the shift from the consonant to vowel, shortening the vowel, lengthening the vowel, and geminate.

The research has reached a set of results, perhaps the most prominent of which is that the classification of the common fundamentals between the Semitic languages necessitated the adoption of concepts that facilitate the process of comparing them and revealing points of convergence and divergence and commensurate with the concepts of the components of the phonetic system of languages of common origin.

The research also aims to show that the Arabic language contains the largest possible number of pausing manifestations and phonetic changes that occur to the phonetic structure of the word in the case of pausing, which indicates that it includes a lot of historical linguistic residuals that go back to the supposed common origin between the Semitic languages.
