This study aimed to identify four main aspects of the criteria for selecting academic leaders in universities: (1) the theoretical foundations manifesting this criteria, (2) the criteria for selecting academic leaders in some global universities, (3) its underlying principles in the universities of Saudi Arabia in light of the Kingdom's 2030 vision, and (4) the reviewing mechanisms for its development in Saudi universities.
The study was limited to Saudi universities in the second semester of the academic year (1442-1443 AH).
The descriptive approach was followed due to its suitability for the purposes of the study.
It was concluded that there are shortcomings in the criteria for appointing leaders, resulting in inadequacies in the capabilities of human resources, including leaders in universities.
This, in return, affected the quality of performance evaluation processes.
In order to achieve a high quality of performance, the study presented some suggestions for overcoming the shortcomings in the criteria for appointing leaders.
Furthermore, it reviewed a number of practical global experiences on the mechanisms of selecting, evaluating, and training academic leaders in universities in order to meet the requirements of performance evaluation processes.
