Abstract EN

The current research aims to identify the development of children's understanding of irony according to the variables of age (5,7,9,11) years, and gender (males, females), as well as identifying the significance of differences in the development of children's understanding of irony according to the age variables (5, 7, 9, 11) years old, and gender (males - females).

to achieve the research objectives, the researcher followed the individual interview method.

the study sample consisted of (160) male and female children.

the study scale was applied, which was prepared by (loukusa and lennon, 2008) which consists of four questions, has been translated into arabic and converted into the vernacular dialect, and the validity of its translation and its standard characteristics have been verified.

the results of the study revealed that : the children reached an understanding of the irony at the age of (9) years.

there are no statistically significant differences between males and females.

according to the results of the research, the researcher recommended some recommendations and suggestions.
