Abstract EN

The study aimed to track and determine the increase in the area of urban populated areas in the city of Tafila and its surrounding areas for the period (1953-2020 ad), and to identify the pattern of urban growth in the city of Tafila and its conformity with the theories of urban growth for the period (1953-2020 ad).

the study relied on the historical and analytical method to track the urban development of the city, and the use of aerial photographs of the study area in 1953, a scale of 1 : 25000, and aerial photographs of the years 1976, 1992, a scale of drawing of 1 : 30000, and satellite visuals for the year 2005 and 2020, and the study used information systems programs geographical and remote sensing for analysis and mapping.

the study showed that the area of urban areas in 1953 amounted to 104591 square meters, and in 2005 the area of urban areas amounted to 671,289 square meters, with an urban growth of 566.7 acres, and in 2020 the area of urban areas reached 764,372 square meters.

the results of the study showed, through the produced maps, that the urban growth in the study area takes a pattern of multi-nuclear growth, while the center of Tafila city has expanded and took the form of cumulative growth.

the study recommended the necessity of adopting the results of the current study to support the ideas of those in charge of city management, by paying attention to the future planning process for the places experiencing urban growth in the region.
