The use of intertextuality in selected speeches of Iraqi former prime minister Haider al-Ibadie

Intertextuality is seen as the presence and influence of the previous texts in forming a new one through interweaving the internal relations of a text with those of the other one .

This paper is devoted to the study of the notion of intertextuality , its forms and its possible effects by analyzing 17 speeches of former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider AL- Ibadie .The intended analysis will be conducted based on Fairclough’s model ( 2003 ).

The outcome of the analysis shows that the technique of indirect quotation occurs with the highest frequency in all the speeches.

The focus on indirect quotation is due to its importance to transfer the speaker’s ideas to the audience and to drive them towards his intentions.

The technique of Reference to terminology , phrases associated with particular people or documents is also used widely by the former Prime Minister in order to support his speech with evidences and documents and to legalize the speeches to convince his audience.
