Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Five groups of eight albino rats were studied.
Group (I), control normal rats fed ordinary rat diet.
Group (II), fed a hyperlipidemic diet (hyperlipidemic control).
Group (III), hyperlipidemic rats administrated garlic oil (28-mg/kg-body wt.
Orally).
Group (IV), hyperlipidemic rats administrated vitamin C (18mg/ kg-body wt.).
Group (V), hyperlipidemic rats administrated garlic oil and vitamin C by the same previous doses.
Blood and brain samples were collected at 2 and 4 weeks after administration of garlic oil and vitamin C.
The recorded data revealed highly significant (p<0.05) increase in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), while there are significant decreases in glutathione reductase (GR-ase), reduced glutathione (GSH), and total superoxide dismutase (t-SOD) in the hyperlipidemic group.
The administration of garlic oil and vit.
C reverse that effect in hyperlipedemic group.
Regarding the brain extract there is a significant decrease in the activities of t-SOD, catalase and GSH, while there is a significant increase in the activity of GSH-Px in the hyperlipidemic rats. These values returned to normal after garlic oil and vit.
C administration.
There is a non significant change in plasma immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) concentrations in all groups allover the experimental periods
