Clinical teachers evaluation

Abstract EN

Purpose : to study different methods of evaluation of clinical teachers and to highlight problems related to clinical teachers evaluation.

Special emphasis is drawn to students’ evaluation of teachers including instruments used, confounding variables, and maturity of students and students’ perception of teaching.

Methodology : an extensive search in the literature was done using medical as well as educational search engines.

Medline / Pubmed were the main medical search engine used; while Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC) was the main search engine for medical education.

Search word used were clinical teaching evaluations, teacher's assessments, clinical tutor's ratings, clinical teaching performance and faculty evaluation.

All studies concerning clinical teaching evaluation were included.

Studies concerned with university settings other than medical were excluded.

Results : methods of teachers’ evaluations include student achievement measures, on-the-job evaluation, performance measures, use of portfolios, students’ evaluation of teachers, peers, administrators and teachers’ self-evaluation Students’ perception of ideal clinical teachers include professionalism, role-model, tendency to explain decisions ; treating students with respect ; willingness to help ; knowledge of subject matter and the ability to present information in a logical sequence.

Conclusion : proper and objective evaluation of clinical teaching still poses an educational challenges.

Students evaluation of medical teachers is one of the modalities most widely used.

No single method is ideal.

Therefore the author suggests triangulation of different modalities.
