English Abstract
Twenty bacterial isolates were obtained from different soil habitats in Al- Karak region.
They were screened for their antimicrobial activity against six test microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcu luteus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Klebsilla pneumoniae).
Five isolates exhibited antimicrobial activity against at least one of the test microorganisms.
One of these isolates, 1A1, was highly active.
It caused an inhibition zones about 24-30 mm in diameter in agar diffusion test.
Optimization of the conditions for production of bioactive extract was performed.
The crude extract of the bacterial of interest was subjected to partial purification by column chromatography.
The bioactivity of the partially purified compounds was tested by agar diffusion assay and their minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) was determined.
Isolate 1A1 was identified as a distinct species in the genus Bacillus using morphological and biochemical test as well as 16S rDNA technology.
