English Abstract

The present study attempts to uncover the types of metaphors used in political speeches and how these metaphors are congruent with Leech's classification of metaphor.

Furthermore, it is intended to investigate the strategies used by translators in translating metaphorical expressions in political speeches.

Finally, it aims to identify the problems that may confront translators when translating metaphorical expressions from Arabic into English such as wrong choice of diction and unjustified omission. The sample of the current study consists of 63 sentences selected from the political speeches of his majesty King Abdullah II, the late president Jamal Abd Al Naser and the late king AL-Hussein bin Talal.

may their souls rest in peace.

The sentences taken from these speeches are translated by three professional translators into English.

Their translations are verified by professional academic referees, who has long been teaching translation at Mu’tah University.

and Jordan University, to check the appropriateness of their translations.

In this study conclusion that the translation of metaphorical expressions of political speeches from Arabic into English is not an easy job as it may pose a problem for translators due to some linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English.
