English Abstract

This study aims at investigating whether Arab students learning English as a second language at Mu'tah University encounter problems in the use of English collocations and need to give attention to this particular linguistic area-collocation.

The study also aims at investigating the sort of strategies which they resort to in dealing with problematic collocations and identifying the major source of collocation errors.

The sample of the study consisted of Jordanian Arab learners of English from senior level at Mu'tah University.

The data for this study was collected by conducting two elicitation tasks : a translation test and a fill in the blank test.

Results showed that the subjects of the study encounter serious problems in the use of English collocations and they need to give attention to this particular linguistic area.

In addition, the results of the study showed that the subjects dealt with problematic collocations by resorting to a number of strategies for the purpose of filling the gap in their collocation competence.

According to their influence, these strategies were: false synonymy, negative transfer, meaning replacement, paraphrase, topic avoidance, message abandonment, word coinage and code switching.

Finally, the results of the study showed that the majority of collocation errors were traceable to intralingua factors.

In light of these results, the study offers a number of pedagogical implications and future research recommendations.
