English Abstract

This in-depth study has aimed to investigate the relationship between translation and the learning and teaching of English sentence structure.

It sheds light on the role that translation can play in facilitating the process of second language learning, let alone its contribution to supporting the students' motivation towards dealing with a foreign language. The thrust of this work consists in tackling the questions of how teachers can use translation in such a way as to improve students' attitude as well as aptitude to grasp the essence of the second language they are learning.

The study, moreover, is concerned with the extent to which the use of L2 learners' LI is necessary while teaching them the second language. The learning hypotheses that are tested in this study comprise : l.

The Grammar-Translation Method of second language teaching 2.

Error Analysis as opposed to Contrastive Analysis . 3.

Linguistic Relativity as advanced by Sapir and Whorf. 4.

The Optimality Theory of phonology by Prince and Smolensky. 5.

The Innateness Hypothesis. The methodology that has been adopted comprises a contrastive study conducted over a sample that consists of 50 seventh-grade male students of Rakeen Secondary School.

The study included two achievement tests in addition to several interviews with some of the informants of the study. The study has concluded that the use of translation or the mother tongue has a positive impact on students' comprehension of foreign language structures.

In addition, there is an L1-based L2 teaching strategy that can be adopted by L2 teachers in this regard.
