English Abstract
The methanol (MeOH) and ethanol ( EtOH) extracts of eleven plants were investigated as antibacterial and antioxidant. The effect of plant extracts was tested against four bacterial isolates: Escherichia coli (E.
coll), Staphylococcus aureus (S.
aureus), Listeria monocytogenes (L.
monocytogenes) and Clostridium prerfirngens (C.
prerfirngen).
The plant extracts have no effect on Gram negative bacterium E.
coli.
The antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria was noticed with extract from the following plants: Sarcopterum spinosum L (S.
spinosum), Paronchia argentea Lam (P.
argentea), Artemisia seiberi (A.
seiberi), Achillea fragrantissima (forssk) (A.
fragrantissima) and Teucrium poliumL.
(T.
polium).
The activity increases as the concentrations of plant extracts increase. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for MeOH plant extracts was found between 0.25 mg / ml (for s.
spinosum against c.
prerfirngens and s.
aureus) and 0.45 mg / ml (for T.
Polium and A.
fragrantissima against L.
monocytogenes).
In EtOH extract the MIC found between 0.20 mg/ml (for s.
spinosum against c.
prerfirngens) and 0.45 mg/ml for (A.
fragrantissima and A seiberi against monocytogenes). The phenolic content in MeOH and EtOH plant extracts were (8.5- 194.9) and (12.1- 252.4) in mg Gallic acid e،}uivalent (GAE) respectively.
The extract of s.
spinosum and A.
fragrantissima contained the highest and the lowest amount of total phenolic compound respectively. A high antioxidant activity was obtained with extracts ofthe following plants: s.
spinosum, A.
fragrantissima, A.
seiberi, T.
Polium, Arum hygrophyllum (A.
hygrophyllum) and Matricaria aurea (Loefl.)(M aurea).
These extracts inhibited lipid peroxidation in the ratios near or reach the inhibition of vitamin E.
Finally there was non significant relation between antioxidant activity and phenolic content.
