English Abstract

The antibacterial effect of methanol and petroleum ether extracts of the following six medicinal plant extracts : Artemisia seiberi, Arum hygrophyllum, Achillea fragrantissima, Sarcopterum spinosum L.

Peganum harmala and Teucrium polium L.

were investigated against the growth of E.

sakazakii(ATCC29004).

The methanol extracts of Peganum harmala, Achillea fragrantissima and Artemisia seiberi were most effective while Petroleum ether extracts didn't show any significant inhibitory effect against E.

sakazakii growth.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the most active plant methanol extracts were P.

harmala (0.00375 mg / ml), A.

fragrantissima (1.95 mg/ml) and A.

seiberi (7.81 mg / ml) Presence of 2 % reconstituted infant milk formula decrease the inhibitory effect of plant extracts against the growth of E.

sakazakii. Different combinations between nosing (0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 1 mg / ml) and disodium ethylene diamante acetic acid (EDTA) (0, 2.5 and 5 mg / ml) were used to investigate their synergistic effect against E.sakazakii.

It was found that these combinations had slightly synergistic effect. Lactobacillus acidophilus (ATCC4356) showed high antagonistic effect toward E.sakazakii.

The percentage inhibition was in average (48.3 %).

Presence of 2 % reconstituted infant milk formula decrease the percentage inhibition to (30.7 %)>
