English Abstract
-This study investigated the effect of using videos on the socio-cultural competence of the EFL learners.
It examined whether foreign language (FL) students learned, FL cultural aspects of by using videos more efficiently than they learned them traditionally.
It also tested the possibility of using videos to supplement existing teaching materials, making lessons more culturally relevant.
The study sought to answer the following questions : Q1 : Do videos have any effect on the socio-cultural competence of the students? Q2 : Which skills and language areas do students acquire more ; reading, listening, speaking, writing and vocabulary? Q3 : Which socio-cultural aspects of language do students acquire more? Social aspects including ; customs, traditions, values, ways of behavior, and habits.
Non–verbal aspects of language include; gestures, postures, and eye contacts.
Literary aspects of language include ; irony, simile, personification, metaphorical expressions, and idiomatic expressions and sayings..
Political and economic aspects of language like ; political system, current currency, and Two groups of students were chosen from the eleventh grade, section (A) consisted of 40 students, was chosen as an experimental group and section (B) consisted of 39 students, was chosen as a control groups.
Data were collected within 10 weeks.
The pre-test post-test was of two parts; a written part and oral part that tested the EFL students' ability to interact culturally and appropriately in communicative settings.
To assess the effect of videos on the EFL socio-cultural competence of the learners, students in both sections sat for the written and oral test at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year 2010-2011 to determine their actual socio-cultural knowledge before starting the experiment.
After ten weeks, the same test was administered as post-test.
The results of the study indicated that the experimental group performed better than the control group in the socio-cultural competence.
Using videos alongside the traditional method has great effect on the socio-cultural competence of the EFL learners.
A set of recommendations were provided at the end of this study.
