English Abstract

This study is interested in evaluating the antibacterial activity of newly synthesized 4- oxo-thiazolidine compounds against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The new thiazolidine compounds were previously synthesized and characterized by Elian (2007) in the department of Chemistry, Yarmouk University and used in this current investigation.

The compounds were tested against three types of bacteria: standard bacterial strains, environmental bacterial strains, and clinical bacterial strains.

Members of the latter group of bacteria were isolated from clinical samples and identified by biochemical method as well as molecular method (16S rRNA gene sequencing).

These biochemical and molecular analyses led for the isolation of three novel bacterial strains and one bacterial species.

The antibacterial activity of the new 4-oxo-thiazolidines, carried out by agar well diffusion method and broth dilution method, showed that all compounds were active against different bacterial species.

Some compounds were more active against the clinical bacterial isolates than the positive control (cloxacillin, a P-lactam antibiotic).

The most prominent activities were detected in case of the compounds T2 and T3, against the clinical isolate Pseudomonas aeruginosa (SSI), as well as the compound T5 against Staphylococcus epidermidis (SS4).

Therefore, further studies must be carried out to test the toxicity of these compounds and the feasibility of these compounds to be used in the future as antibacterial agents against clinical isolates as well as against other types of microorganisms such as fungi and protozoa.
