Students' command of transcription

Abstract EN

This study investigates the problems that face the Iraqi students who study English as a foreign language and the errors they make in transcription.

The errors are classified into : consonantal and vocalic errors, stress placement errors and errors related to the weak–form words.

As for consonantal errors, the most serious one is in transcribing " nk " and " ng ".

Vocalic errors, on the other hand, appear in transcribing triphthongs.

Stressing the second syllable in polysyllabic words is the third problem that faces students.

They also face difficulties in transcribing some weak–form words.

This study tries to specify these problems and trace their causes and then to suggest solutions.
