English Abstract

This study aims to evaluate learners' reading strategies of third year secondary students at the Sudanese Community Schools in Qatar.

The study sets to find out ways that help students raise their awareness of reading strategies and how to use them effectively in order to improve their reading comprehension.

This researchers' point of view is therefore consistent with Truong, L.

(2002.75) who confirms that "the success in helping any student to become a strategic reader hinges upon the strategies he employs".

The target group of this study is third year secondary students at the Sudanese Schools in Qatar for the school year 2005 / 2006.

To achieve the aims of study and find answers to the questions of study, the researcher uses the descriptive, analytical method to analyse data collected from informants.

After analysis of data, the study has come up with a number of findings.

Some of the most important findings are : 1.

Third year secondary students at the Sudanese Community Schools in Qatar use both successful and unsuccessful reading strategies.

However, the majority use successful reading strategies though they are not aware enough of these strategies.

2.

The study revealed low significant relationship between awareness of reading strategies and reading outcomes.

3.

The study revealed insufficient English teachers' awareness of learners' reading strategies and their importance in effective reading.

In the light of the results of the study, the researcher recommends the following : 1.

Students are to be made aware of different types of successful learners' reading strategies that they could use before, during and after reading.

2.

Students are recommended to practise reading as pair and group activities to promote cooperative learning and sharing of information.

3.

Organizing in-service training courses for teachers of English to familiarize them with the basic successful reading strategies, so that they can train their students to use them effectively.
