English Abstract

In this study, guar gum was treated thermally utilizing a 3² full factorial design where both temperature and time were investigated for their impact on the physical performance of the treated guar.

The result has pointed to the effect of both factors on the viscosity of the produced guar gum where unexpected increase in viscosity at temperature ranged 50-70°C was revealed and attributed to the solubilisation of the polymer resulting from temperature elevation and timing.

Compared to non treated guar and xanthan gums, treated guar gum revealed an improved viscosity, swelling ability and compressibility features.

Moreover, tablet formulations composed of treated guar gum showed improved flowability, accepted tablet hardness and accepted friability more than those associated with non treated guar and xanthan gums.

Furthermore, it has been shown that the release of loaded drugs from treated guar gum tablets was the fastest among other polymers owing to the low viscosity and swelling capacity of the treated guar gum which result in delay in the formation of gel layer that control the drug release from such type of tablet formulations.
