English Abstract

-This study was carried out in the White Nile State at White Nile Ahlia College (English mature students) and University of Elimam Elmahdi , Faculty of Medicine and Arts, specifically, English and History sections , first level. The study aims at investigating the role of the background knowledge (Schemata) in comprehending English texts and the effect of age and experience in building up schemata.

The total number of the subjects was 200.

They all were given two tests in the medical (test one) and the literary (test two) fields.

Each test consists of 10 multiple choice questions.

The maximum time was 20 minutes and the total scores were 20.

The data was analyzed statistically to find out the mean and the standard deviation.

The number of students who failed in answering each question was counted.

The Pearson's correlation was also computed for finding out the relationship between students' performance in the two tests . The results have shown that the medical students were fast and better in test one than in test two, while the English and the History students were fast and better in test two than in test one.

However, the Ahlia students' results were positive in both test one and test two because of age and experience. The study confirmed the importance of the role played by schemata in understanding texts and the effect of age and experience in building up schemata
