English Abstract

-The use of Grewia tenax fruits as dietary supplement is widespread, especially throughout the west and south of Sudan and mainly used in traditional medicine by tribes that live in these areas of Sudan for treatment of typhoid fever, malaria, iron deficiency anemia, and malnutrition diseases for long time, as well as cold beverage (general tonic).

The aim of this study is to find an easy and reproducible method of extraction to the fruits of G.

tenax in a similar manner of traditional extraction method and to standardize the extract that selected for formulation into suitable dosage for children and elder persons that can be easily administered (effervescent tablets) using thin layer chromatography (TLC), Infrared (IR) and Ultra-Violet (UV) spectrometry.

The selected extract (maceration method using ethanol 80%) for formulation reveals the highest yield value and iron content compared to other extracts. Two -step wet granulation method was the method of choice to formulate both formulae in reproducible manner because the extract had semi-solid consistency due to high content of carbohydrates this makes the drying process using heat to dry the extract impossible.

Microcrystalline cellulose was added to both formulae to adsorb the excess moisture and to facilitate the disintegration of tablets, where as lactose had less efficiency to adsorb the moisture but provide additional palatability to tablets.

The produced tablets of both formulae showed good quality and passed all quality control tests that subjected.
