English Abstract
This thesis is an attempt to apply some aspects of the theory of translation on a translated work.
It is, therefore, a combination of theory and practice.
It is divided into two parts.
These are a theoretical part and a translation of a book entitled The Sudan Under Wingate. The first part deals with the main theoretical issues related to translation, in general and to the translation of The Sudan Under Wingate, in particular.
These issues cover an introduction on translation as an activity and a process, knowledge of the source language text (SLT) (English) the methods of translation adopted in translating this particular book, the problems faced and the procedures applied in solving these problems. The second part is the actual translation of the source language text (SLT) (English) into a target language text (TLT) (Arabic).
Gabriel Warburg's Sudan Under Wingate is an academic paper submitted for the fulfillment of a Ph.D.
in history from London University, Center of Middle Eastern and African Studies.
It is a description and analysis of the administrative policies in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan during the period of Condominium.
The author attempts to evaluate the effect of that administration on the population of the Sudan. Knowing that such a description and an analysis are vital and useful to the Arab readers in general, and the Sudanese readers in particular, translation of The Sudan Under Wingate can be considered as a contribution to the Arabic library in the field of translated historical works.
