English Abstract

The main objectives of Improvement of operation and maintenance of hydro–power plants is to sustain adequate capacity during most of the operation hours, to produce maximum generation of electric power, improve the performance of turbine units; to decrease the cost of electric energy generated (KWH) and to increases the share percentage of the total electric power generated. Roseires Power Station, as case study, is the biggest hydroelectric power plant in Sudan.

The plant was founded in 1971, it was equipped with 7 turbine units, with capacity 40 MW for each of Kaplan type, and with a total installed capacity of 280 MW. Over the years Roseires Power Station was suffering because of severe problems and some other factors (such as problems during flood season, problems during dry season as shortage of water, cavitations problems and lack of spare parts problems), which affect the performance of turbine units, and resulted in a great decline in electric power generated (during flood season the power generated decline to 5MW for each Turbine unit ), raise the cost of electric power generated (KWH), and decrease the share percentage of the total energy generated. Since the year 1998, NEC was carrying a great rehabilitation program for improving the performance of Roseires Power Station. This study covers the main aspects related to the Improvement of operation and maintenance of hydropower plants.

In particular, the research concentrates on Roseires Power Station.

The Improvement of operation and maintenance of the plant can be achieved through some aspects and suggestions mentioned in this research.

Applying the proposed plans and suggestions will lead to a sustainable and higher utilization of turbine capacity, increase in the electric power generated, reduction in the cost of electric power, reduction in human accidents, and decreasing the cost of operation and maintenance.

The research contains tables, figures and graphs used to investigate the problems.

Other factors which affect the performance of hydropower plants in general and Roseires Power Station in particular was also mentioned and discussed.

Finally the research concludes with a number of recommendations for improving the performance of Roseires Power Station.
