Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The purpose of this study is to find out which one of these three strategies : The keyword.
the semantic.
and the keywordsemantic is the most effective for intermediate and secondary school students to learn vocabulary.
These three strategies were carried out by subjects in actual classroom situations.
Three EFL classes in an intermediate school and three EFL classes in a secondary school were divided into three treatment groups (keyword.
semantic, and keywordsemantic).
The students whose first language is Arabic had 4 days of instruction.
A multiple-choice and cued-recall tests were conducted to eval uate the effects of both I day and 9 days after the treatment.
The results show that semantic is the best method for EFL higher level students.
and keyword method is the best for aiding the retention of EFL lower level students.
The keyword-semantic method does not show a strong evidence of its suitability for any level of EFL students.
Suggested implications of the results are discussed in the paper.
