English Abstract

BACKGROUND : Calcium generally considered a key element for maintaining bone mineral homeostasis.

New evidence and review of earlier studies supports the view that calcium also plays a role in adipocyte lipid kinetics at the cellular level and in moderating fatness at the population level [14].

Within adipocytes, intracellular calcium levels alter the balance between lipid synthesis and breakdown favoring lipogenesis when cytosolic calcium levels are high.

[14].

AIM : The aim of this study was to determine serum calcium level among obese Sudanese people in Khartoum state ; and to investigate the relationship between serum calcium level and obesity using statistical tests sensitivity and specificity.

METHOD : In a cross-sectional study serum calcium level was determined.

Sample size was 158 apparently healthy ,free from sub clinical thyroid diseases, adults, 80 (50.6 %) of them male and 78 (49.4 %) of them female.

Their ages rage from 18 to 55 years ( mean 36.91  10.442 years).

For data collections a structured questionnaire was used.

RESULTS : In this study, sample size of 158 representing the different bodyweight groups in Sudan (36 underweight, 36 obese, 36 overweight, and 50 normal weight individuals respectively) .

Underweight BMI was less than 18.5.

Normal weight BMI was taken between 18.5 and 24.9.

Overweight BMI was ranged from 25.0 to 29.9.

Where as obese BMI calculated as 30.0 to 39.9.

Their sera were analyzed to determine the level of serum calcium in Khartoum state (Sudan).

The serum calcium levels in obese sample was (9.5971.632) compared to the serum calcium level in normal weight sample which was (9.600 1.344).

The serum calcium levels in overweight sample was (9.3561.002) compared to the serum calcium level in normal weight sample which was( 9.600 1.344).

The serum calcium levels in underweight sample was( 9.718 1.407) compared to the serum calcium level in normal weight sample which is (9.600  1.344).

No statistically significant differences was found between obese, overweight, underweight compared to normal weight serum calcium levels (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION : Based on this study, No differences was found between obese, overweight, underweight individual sera compared to normal weight serum calcium levels in Sudan .

In addition, no relationship found between serum calcium level and obesity by using statistical tests sensitivity and specificity.
