Services for visually impaired persons in India have a history of more than 100 years.

The last two decades have witnessed a phenomenal growth in special education services in India.

In this article, the author traces the development of educational services for visually impaired children in India, describing the factors that were responsible for the growth.

The different educational models for visually impaired children that are currently in practice in India are briefly outlined.

The article goes on to analyse some obstacles to the further growth of the field, and suggests possible ways of overcoming these obstacles.
