The effects of training madelon English pronunciation of EFL learners

Abstract EN

This study was designed to determine the effect of the "Training Model" on the pronunciation performance of the Saudi EFL learners at the Faculty of Education, King Abdulaziz University, AI-Madinah AlMunawwarah, Saudi Arabia.

Data for this research were collected from pre- and post test scores on an oral test consisting of single words, minimal pairs, and short sentences with contextual clues.

Analysis of the data was made by means of descriptive statistics and t-testing using the statistical package entitled "EPISTAT".

The subjects involved in this study were 30 Saudi male learners enrolled at the Department of Foreign Languages during the year 1410.The subjects were selected and assigned randomly to the treatment or the control group.

Two male teaching assistants were also assigned to work as instructors.

All the subjects for this research participated for five weeks with two instructional sessions of two hours each week.

The results revealed that the treatment group made statistically significant higher scores in pronunciation test than the control group.

In addition to being significant, the differences are meaningful and large.

The treatment group had a mean of 2.53 grade points higher than the control group on the posttest performance in pronunciation.

Hence, the "Training Model" seems to be applicable to pronunciation teaching program.

The recommendations include adopting the "Training Model" in a large class, providing detailed information about the model and its sequence in the teacher's guide, designing remedial pronunciation program using it and conducting further research studies in other language learning areas.
