Abstract AR

Abstract EN

In his Fihris al-Faharis wa al Athbat (Repertoire of biographies and biographical registers)1 the Moroccan scholar and Sufi , Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani (d.

1962), lines up his most prestigious scholarly pedigrees linking him to the various scholarly networks in the Islamic world.

Among these, the chains of transmission of learning (silsila-s) of the religious scholars from Bilad al-Sind and Bilad al-Hind occupy a prominent place.

Al- Kattani acquired some of these academic credentials directly through the Indian scholars whom he encountered in the Mashriq during his numerous pilgrimage journeys.

He obtained the other authorizations to transmit learning (ijaza-s) indirectly through his Moroccan and other Muslim teachers, including those originating from Bilad al-Sudan.

After giving a general view of al-Kattani’s direct links with Indian scholars from the early 20th century, the paper will examine two major West African links in the chain of transmission of learning between India an Morocco : Ahmad Baba al-Tinbucti (d.

1624) and Salih al-Fullani (d.

1803).
