Requirement courses in english : challenges and opportunities

Abstract EN

The present paper is an analysis of Requirement Courses in English, taught in different Faculties at the universities of Yemen.

On the basis of a close examination of these courses it is maintained that they fall within the scope of English for Specific Purpose (ESP).They have been studied and assessed within the theoretical frame work of ESP in terms of objectives, materials of teaching and overall presentation of these courses.

Dimensions and parameters of analysis have been drawn from the theory of ESP.

Register analysis, needs analysis and outline materials of teaching have been given focus to make these courses relevant and appropriate.

In view of wide-spread use of English and the growth of globalization these courses have to be made some kind of bridges to advancement and development.

They can meet new challenges if they are pursued within the framework of ESP.

Towards the end of the paper recommendations, drawn from the study, have been given with a view to making Requirement Courses in English useful, interesting and productive .
