English Abstract

Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts of Aloysia triphylla, Ceratonia siliqua, Cupressus sempervirens and Punica granatum were evaluated in this study.

Disc diffusion method were used to measure the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extracts of these plants against Gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coli and Klebsilla oxytoca) and Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus).Total phenolic content of Methanolic extracts of all tested plants was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method.

Also the concentration required to scavenge 50 % of DPPH free radical (IC50) was measured by DPPH assay.

The antioxidant capacity was determined by both DPPH and FRAP methods.

Also the relationship between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity was assessed.

The results of antibacterial activity showed that P.

granatum peels exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria strains if compared to methanolic plant extract where used in this study.

The highest amount of total phenolic content was located in C.

sempervirens 261.8 followed by P.

granatum peels 243, A.

triphylla 68.83 and C.

siliqua 62.16 mg GAE / gm plant extract.

Depend on the IC50 values of DPPH assay, the highest free radical scavenging potential was found in P.

granatum peels (0.047 mg Trolox / ml) followed by C.

sempervirens 0.062, C.

siliqua 0.32 and A.

triphylla 0.8 mg Trolox/mL.

The ability of plant extracts to reduce ferric (Fe+3) to ferrous (Fe+2) ion by FRAP method, was nearly the same.

The highest efficiency was found in C.

sempervirens followed by P.

granatum peels, while the lowest efficiency was found in A.

triphylla.

In addition this study demonstrates a good correlation between total phenolic content and the ability to scavenge free radical and reduce efficiency.

The results of this study revealed that the P.

granatum peels have a high capacity to inhibit bacterial activity and antioxidant potential compared with other plants that used in this study.
