English Abstract

Methanol extracts of pomegranate peels and lupine seeds were used to assess their effect on some biochemical parameters and histological changes of liver and kidney organs including immunohistochemical expression of heat shock protein (HSP70) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in iron overloaded experimental rats.

Iron overload was induced in male albino rats by intraperitoneal injection of ferrovin (ferric hydroxide sucrose complex) at a dose of 20 mg once a day for two weeks.

Rats were divided into normal and experimental groups with ten rats each.

Group I: normal control; Group II: negative control; Group III: iron overloaded rats treated with 300 mg/kg body weight pomegranate methanol extract once a day for four consecutive weeks; Group IV: iron overloaded rats treated with 500 mg/kg body weight lupine methanol extract once a day for four consecutive weeks.

Results showed significant differences between treated and control groups.

That ware clearly demonstrated by improving body, liver and kidney weights and decreasing levels of serum iron, ferritin, creatinine and urea besides activity of AST and ALT.

In addition, histological and immunohistochemical evaluation of liver and kidney organs of treated ironoverload rats revealed considerable enhancement in organ's structure and expression of (HSP70) and (iNOS), when compared to negative control rat group.

However, the therapeutic effect of lupine and pomegranate methanol extracts appeared to be dose dependent due to variations in their enhancement effect on the obtained findings.
