English Abstract
The present study attempts to investigate methods of translating metaphors with special emphasis on poetic texts.
It is divided into four chapters.
Chapter one, which is the introduction, includes the aims, questions of the study, significance, and the methodology adopted.
The second chapter deals with the notion and types of metaphor.
It looks at metaphor from a translation perspective, that is, the techniques and approaches adopted in rendering metaphor from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL).
Also, translation of poetry in general and metaphor, in particular, are highlighted.
The problems of poetic translation and the various views, in this regard, are given with special emphasis on metaphor in T.S.
Eliot's poem, The Waste Land.
Chapter three includes the practical part which comprises the analysis and assessment of three translations of The Waste Land into Arabic.
In this chapter, an attempt is made to evaluate each translation in accordance with a model extracted from Broeck and Newark's suggestions about the strategies of translating metaphor.
The thesis ends with chapter four which includes the conclusions and recommendations.
