English Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the effect of the genre social activity method on the English writing skill of Jordanian university students and their attitudes towards writing.

It attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

What is the effect of the genre social activity method on Jordanian university students’ English writing skill? 2.

What is the effect of the genre social activity method on Jordanian university students’ attitudes towards writing? The study hypotheses were stated as follows: 1.

There is no significant difference in Jordanian university students’ English writing skill at the level of 0.05 between the experimental group and the control group due to instructional method.

2.

There is no significant difference in Jordanian university students’ attitudes towards writing at the level of 0.05 between the experimental group and the control group due to instructional method. The subjects of the study consisted of eighty sophomores majoring in English at Princess Alia University College, Al-Balqa’ Applied University.

These classes were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. To examine the study hypotheses, the researcher developed an instructional writing program based on the genre social activity method.

This program consisted of nine lessons.

The researcher also developed a writing achievement test and a questionnaire to measure students’ attitudes towards writing.

The period of the experiment lasted for one semester (approximately three months).

Students’ scores on the writing achievement tests and their attitudes towards writing were analyzed using the ANCOVA.

The findings of the study showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in writing achievement in favor of the experimental group (F=5.41) which was taught using the genre social activity method.

The findings also showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in students’ attitudes towards writing in favor of the experimental group (F=18.66).

In light of these findings, the researcher proposed recommendations to university instructors of English writing and researchers who are interested in writing instruction.
