English Abstract

The present study was an attempt to determine the difficulties of teaching English language at the lower basic stage in Jordan from teachers' and educational supervisors' perspectives.

For the purpose of this study, the researcher used one questionnaire for teachers and supervisors, the items showed the major difficulties of teaching English at the lower basic stage.

The following questions were addressed: 1.

What are the difficulties facing teaching English to lower basic stage students in Jordan from the teachers’ perspective? 2.

What are the difficulties facing teaching English to lower basic stage students in Jordan from the supervisors’ perspective? Two samples were selected for this study: one for teachers and the other for supervisors.

The sample of teachers (N=431) was randomly selected from the population of English teachers who teach English at the lower basic stage in Jordan during the academic year 2010/2011.

The supervisors’ sample was all English supervisors in north governorates, because they are not so many, it included (23) supervisors.

The results related to the first question revealed that the difficulties related to the school environment came in the first rank with high degree; while the difficulties related to teachers came in the last rank with moderate degree.

The results related to the second question revealed that the difficulties related to the educational aids came in the first rank with high degree.

While the difficulties related to teachers came in the last rank with moderate degree.

In the light of these findings, the researcher proposed recommendations to the Ministry of Education.
