English Abstract
This study attempted to examine the overall effectiveness of distance education (DE) mode used for English language teaching (ELT) at the secondary stage of education in Jordan.
In addition, it also examined the effect of interaction between gender and mode of instruction on the achievement of female and male secondary stage students.
For purposes of this study, the researcher designed self-instructional study materials (in print) covering the topic 'sentence types' (English Grammar) and a 21-item achievement test covering the same topic.
The materials were used exclusively by the DE learners, while both the components (i.e., the pre- and the post-tests) of the achievement test were used by both the control group and the experimental group.
The tests recorded the entry and the terminal behaviors of the students and thus served to determine their comparative levels of achievement.
The purposeful sample consisted of 47 students (male and female) from two sections of the 11th grade at the Jubilee School, King Hussein Foundation (Amman-2nd Directorate of Education).
One section consisting of 23 students (taught in the traditional mode by the researcher) served as the control group, while the other served as the experimental group consisting of 24 students, who engaged in self-study under the DE mode.
The two distinctive pedagogical transactions remained in operation for a period of two months in the 2nd semester of the scholastic year 2004 – 2005.
ANCOVA was used to assess and determine the DE program’s degree of effectiveness in relation to the traditional mode.
The test revealed no significant difference between achievement of the DE learners and those taught in traditional classroom environment.
Additionally, by analyzing the ANCOVA results, interaction between group and gender was found to have little effect on the achievement of the male and female DE students in this study.
In other words, the results of the study record no significant difference between the performance of the male and the female students as a result of the treatment.
The above findings provide motivation for more and extensive research on Distance Education System(s) (DES) in Jordan.
They also clearly support and encourage the idea of implementing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enhanced DES at all educational levels in Jordan in order to address the educational concerns of our times and also to adapt to newly emerging educational environments and possibilities.
