Abstract EN

The records of 179 patients with inguinal hernia underwent inguinal repair between January 1997 and July I99H at Prince Hasliem thin Al-Hussein was analyzed, t here werel25 (70%) males and 54(30%) females, Age ranged from 40 days to 15 years.

Twenty-five (14%) patients presented as emergencies with irreducible inguinal hernia and 15 of them were under I year old, 10(40%) patients of those were reduced conservatively.

There were no mortalities, but the complication rate (excluding recurrences) was 6% for elective cases and 20% (3)for those treated as emergencies.

There were 10 recurrences (5.60%), especially those under 1 year of age, with inguinal hernia, are prone to incarceration.

Since the operative and postoperative complications are greater in those treated as emergencies, eary referral and prompt elective treatment of inguinal hernia is recommended
