English Abstract
The problem of cost overruns is still a critical issue in the construction industry worldwide as it is in Jordan.
This research paper attempts to analyze the main factors influencing the construction stage cost overruns in building projects in general covering both private and public sectors.
This research commenced by performing a general literature review to identify the factors influencing cost overruns followed by the preparation and distribution of a questionnaire to local Jordanian construction practitioners to distinguish those most significant factors.
A statistical analysis was carried out on the survey results to identify the significant top ten causative factors followed by conducting a factor analysis to extract the most critical.
The results obtained from the statistical analysis were later compared to the factors derived from the analysis of collected actual construction case studies.
The comparison established that additional work / change orders by client was ranked number one in both findings in addition to forming a minimum of 33.82 % of total additional costs in actually completed projects.
The research was concluded by providing recommendations for managing those critical factors through research and practical implementations.
