English Abstract

-This study aims at investigating the difficulties facing English majors when translating Hadiths from Arabic into English.

Thirty Hadiths were selected mainly from the Hadith book "Rijad Alsalehhen min Kalaam Sajid Almorsaleen" " by Alnawawy .A test was designed and distributed to forty English majors enrolls in "Translation 2" course in English Language department in the first semester in the academic year (2014-2015) to translate.

Then, their translations were compared to the Hadiths translations on the web site; Sunnah.

Com. The results of the study reveals that most of the students could not produce adequate translations for the given Hadiths as they faced difficulties while translating .These difficulties were mostly due to the lack of appropriate equivalence for the Islamic terms in English, the students misunderstanding for the intended message, the students overlooking for the differences between English and Arabic and the students tendency to use the literal translation. Further, the study confirms the idea that the translator of Hadith should use the ideational equivalence, i.e.

non-literal translation, which focuses on transferring the meaning in translating Hadith rather than using the formal equivalence .Finally, the study has given recommendations for the English language departments, teachers of translation and for further research in the variety problems that face the translator when translating religious texts.
